Timothy and Titus were devoted protégés of the apostle Paul. Timothy was relatively young but capable; Titus was older and experienced. Paul utilized the zeal and talents of both men in their ministry of the word of God and service within the brotherhood of the early church. The apostle has nothing but excellent things to say to (and about) both men in his writings.
Paul’s first epistle to Timothy serves as an excellent training manual for ministers of the gospel. These instructions cover doctrinal teachings, Christian conduct, candidates for elders and deacons, and other important subjects. Paul’s second epistle to Timothy is far more personal, revealing his fatherly relationship with the young evangelist. Paul knows he is about to be executed and thus strongly and endearingly encourages his “son” to “fight the good fight,” finish what he started, and keep the faith.
Paul’s epistle to Titus honors that minister’s credentials, trustworthiness, and commitment to upholding God’s word even amid very challenging circumstances. This letter is more “business” than personal, yet it is evident that Paul highly respects Titus and can depend upon him to carry out whatever tasks the apostle entrusts to him.
1 & 2 Timothy and Titus Personal Workbook provides a practical explanation of the words, phrases, and doctrinal subjects in these three epistles. This commentary is ideal for personal or group study, with questions at the end of each section designed to enhance an application of the text to real life.
