Quick Study Commentary: 1 & 2 Timothy and Titus

Timothy was the apostle Paul’s young but remarkable protégé and was a key player in the founding and early history of several churches mentioned in the New Testament. Paul intimately refers to him as “brother,” “fellow worker,” “beloved and faithful child in the Lord,” and simply “son.” Titus was another of Paul’s protégés, likely older than Timothy, and a capable servant and effective minister. Paul speaks very highly of Titus and is not hesitant to dispatch him to deal with difficult situations—a commendable compliment to his abilities.

Paul’s epistles to Timothy and Titus offer us a wealth of insight and information. First Timothy serves as an excellent training manual for ministers of the gospel. It also reveals much about doctrinal teachings of the church, Christian lifestyle, candidates for elders and deacons, and other important subjects. Second Timothy is far more personal, revealing Paul’s fatherly relationship with Timothy. In this role, he imparts final words of exhortation, calls of duty, and warnings to his “son” in the faith. The result is a heartfelt and passionate correspondence unlike anything else in the New Testament.

Paul’s epistle to Titus honors that minister’s credentials, trustworthiness, and commitment to upholding God’s word even amid very challenging circumstances. This letter is more “business” than personal, yet it is evident that Paul highly respects Titus and can depend upon him to carry out whatever tasks the apostle entrusts to him.
